Almost half of the European population will be using the mobile Internet by 2008, according to an extremely bullish new report from Forrester Research.

The company predicts that next-generation handsets will fast outnumber standard phones as users are attracted to functionality like colour and the speed offered by GPRS - a conclusion reached by each new report on this market.

Forrester, which predicts that 70% of Europeans will use a mobile this year, believes mobile Internet users will outnumber non-users by 3:2 in 2008. This equates to 76% of European consumers. According to senior analyst Michelle de Lussanet, as browsers become an ever more standard feature on handsets, consumers will use them more.

Forrester predicts mobile Internet usage will reach 10% of the European population this year, before rising to 48% in 2008.

By then, the company sees 97% of mobile phones in use being capable of mobile Internet access, meaning that 76% of European consumers will possess one.

According to Forrester, European mobile Internet penetration has grown from 53% of the total population in 2000, to 66% at the end of 2002, with subscriber penetration hitting 70% this year and rising to 79% by 2008.
