NEC Corporation has unveiled a prototype mobile phone that allows users to watch digital television broadcasts.

In Japan, a terrestrial digital-TV broadcasting service will commence from December 2003 in major metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka districts. After a few years, it is scheduled to offer programmes specifically targeted for portable terminals, including mobile phones, as part of the terrestrial digital TV programmes. With the availability of the service, mobile phones can receive not only the digital-TV programmes, but also further attractive programmes with effective combinations of TV broadcasting and mobile communications, integrating services such as image, voice, data, and mobile Internet applications and content.

NEC is also considering expanding the model's functions to allow users to record television programmes on the mobile phone, which the company is aiming to launch commercially in 2005. The new mobile phones would also enable users to conduct push-button-purchase TV shopping.

NEC has not set a target price for the new product but a marketing survey found that it may be priced about US$50 to US$60 higher than regular models.
