Samsung Liquidmetal phone

Terminator II-style shape-changing robots aren't made from Liquidmetal – not yet anyway. But metals whose basic structure is fluid, which can be bent and moulded like plastic yet become harder than steel, are now a reality. Korean company Liquidmetal Technologies makes amorphous alloys – metals with a random atomic structure, rather than the crystalline structure of other metals.

The technique allows them to create alloys which are two or three times stronger than titanium alloys and as non-corrosive as stainless steel. Their structure means they can also be moulded in the same way as plastics, allowing for greater freedom in design. Samsung is working on the first Liquidmetal phone, the ultra-slim and light SCH-X199, for release in China.
