SK Telecom Repellent Ringtones
Many claim they can't stand them, but sales of ringtones are forecast to overtake sales of music CDs in the UK this year. But there are other uses for a mobile device that can emit customised sounds. South Korean mobile network SK Telecom has launched an insect-repellent ringtone. It supposedly wards off potentially blood-sucking mossies (pregnant females, apparently) by mimicking the sound, undetectable to most humans, of the male mosquito's wingbeat, which is the last thing the ladies want to hear when they're drinking for two.
More practically for mobile users in the northern hemisphere, a US firm is working on developing an anti-mugging alarm ringtone loud and scary enough to deter potential attackers.
