Worldwide mobile phone demand is up, after a few years of slack, but feroucious competition has meant that even with increased sales, established phone manufacturers like Nokia are looking at reduced profits.

Additionally, much of the growth is in economically poorer areas such as China and South Asia, where the more profitable high-end handsets are unlikey to sell in volume. Robust competition is generally good for consumers, but what will it mean to innovation if companies like Nokia struggle?
