I have just downloaded Windows Media Player 10 (its only a beta version) and it looks like a great improvement over Media Player 9... BUT it still doesn't let you convert music files from MP3 to WMA.

Does anyone know of any decent software that will let me do that? I heard that soundforge (?) might be the one but I don't want to mess my music files up....

Someone has offered me a MP3 player on the cheap (dunno what size the memory is though) and I know that WMA takes up less space per track so I could get more on it. I know I said before that this type of thing doesn't really appeal to me but I fancy trying it anyway....

im not sure if musicmatch will let you convert from mp3 to wma, have a look on download.com. But i find altho wma is smaller than mp3 the quality is not the same. Another file type becoming popular is ogg vorbis which i think most new mp3 players support?

Argos is doing a nice little mp3 player for £29.95 but only 64mb storage, which is still enough for an hours worth of music.

Ta for that, will have a look.

He thinks its a 512MB memory but he's not sure...might be a 256MB. Should be good enough, wonder if it will fit under my crash helmet......

normally its a mb a minute so even 256mb will be good but 512 brilliant.
What sort is it? is it a stick one? And you cant listen to one when driving!!!!!! you will falll off or something.

He says it plugs into a hole somewhere on your PC (his words not mine) so I would guess its a stick one.

And I wouldn't be able to hear myself singing either which is a VERY good thing believe me. :bo: Am tone deaf!!!!!

Thinking about that I think you are right. I just tried my helmet on with a pair of old headphones and apart from the fact the bloody things popped out my ears when I was putting it on it was a right struggle to get it off again, so I am giving up on that idea now.

1. Make sure the MP3 player will also play WMA's, because not all do as a default.

2. Windows Plus Pack comes with an MP3 to WMA converter (converts most other common formats to WMA too, such as WAV), I happen to have it, but I think in the shops you have to pay a fair bit for it :bo:
Unless your willing to trawl the 'net for a cracked version, but my lips are sealed....

I use the 'dBpowerAMP Music Converter' converter to change MP3's into smaller MP3 files. Its cut the files size to half with only a tiny loss of quality. It works for my ngage but im not sure about it working on a normal MP3 player. I have about an hours worth of music on 25MB. Hope it helps Nick :)

An hour on a 25MB card?

It must sound terrible because reasonable quality music would work out to be one mb a minute so therfore 25mb would work out at 25 minutes and instead you have 60 minutes?

From what i have read near cd quality is compressed at 128kb any less than that i find the quality starts to go downhill really quickly.

It sounds good on my ngage.Just a little more hiss before the music starts. It sounds just the same though on my computer :)

Prob just me being picky then.........i listen to Thin Lizzy a lot and so i love the thumping bass, anything with 'hiss' drives me up the wall which is difficult as the Thin Lizzy tracks are so old anyway.

different people have different levels of 'good' quality, like I'm particulary picky and like my sound systems (hifi, PC, portable music player) to be of pretty good quality rather than the cheapest one you can find (mp3 players excluded tho I think).

i agree with that D.......you get what you pay for when it comes to audio players, especially the cheap personal cd players which i find to be far far too tinny.
I had an mp3 player once the cd kind and between tracks it was so hissy it was really like listening to heavy rain.

fortunately I've got friends who can't tell the difference between a £15 Bush CD player and a £90 Panasonic CD Player :bo: so you can imagine how hard it is trying to explain how DVD is better quality than video to them....
