SOURCED FROM MOBILEBURN

Earlier today, LG and AuthenTec announced the first mobile phone with fingerprint scanning capabilities in the Korean market. The new handset, the LG LP3800, makes use of AuthenTec's latest AES2510 fingerprint scanner. The scanner enables the LG phone to be securely locked, yet easily unlocked by the proper person. LG considers this of particular importance since the advent of their BankOn mobile banking system.

As stated in today's press release:

"As BankON gained popularity, the level of security for cell phones has been an issue. We are proud to introduce our LP3800, as it ensures the protection of the personal information," said Yoon June Weon, chief marketing officer at LG Telecom. "Also, the biometric technology allows users to securely use their handsets without having to type in pin numbers repetitively. It is much more convenient to protect their personal data."

"AuthenTec's new swipe sensors were designed to provide the most convenient form of personal security for cell phones and a wide range of other devices," said Scott Moody, president and CEO of AuthenTec. "With the LP3800's advanced features and mobile-commerce capabilities, this added level of security provides important protection and clearly sets this phone apart."

AuthenTec says that their fingerprint scanner has the ability to read the print from under the surface of the skin, thereby avoiding problems with reading dirty or calloused fingers.

It seems likely as mobile phones become ever more expensive and capable, that we'll see fingerprint scanners and other biometric security systems become more common.

they've put it on some PDA's too, so you touch the touch-screen and its sensitive enough to pick up finger prints, its an excellent idea :)

but what if someone needs to use your phone in an emergency?

erm......don't know lol, thats a very good point. I guess the manufacturers never thought of that one. Like you know as a safety feature all candy-bar shaped phones have to be able to dial numbers such as 112, 999, 911 and 08 when the keypad is locked for emergencies? Well my Sagem MyX-7, and my brothers MyX-2 BOTH will dial 112 and 911 when locked, but not 08 or much more importantly, 999! Which is a bit worrying if your in an accident and desperatly need to dial 999 in a hurry, especially if someone else needs to use your phone in an emergency like you said.

No point in dialling 911 over here, but 112 will work.
