View Full Version : What PC do you have
I'm looking at upgrading my current PC its an old Compaq 866 getting a little bit outdated now....what PC's do all you people use and everyone can answer this as they wouldn't be reading the forums otherwise :)
E-Machines 270; Bargain at £600 last November.
A PC world special. Actually it's OK, not very powerful (1.70GHz Celeron,40GB H/D) but it does me.
Great PC :wicked:, but stay away from PC World - SHIT SERVICE!!!!!!:pissed:
1 million percent agree on PC World being crap service
I HATE PC WORLD WITH A PASSION
:fire: PC WORLD :hammer:
Too right......pc world total rubbish, glad to take your money but offer useless customer service and backup.

oh too true, i despise them too (tho ironicly i work for the same company, lol).
I've got an AMD Athlon 1400Mhz (I know that sounds slow in comparison to regular ones, but you've got to understand that a 1400 Mhz AMD actually runs at the same speed as a 2000 Mhz P4, so ner :p) with 512MB RAM, 64MB GeForce 4 Ti4200 (Gainward 'Golden Sample' version, 'tis overclocked by Gainward), CD-Re Writer, an 18 GB HDD, a 40 GB HDD, Sound Blaster Live 4.1 Surround, Logitech Multimedia Internet Keyboard, Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse and a 21" monitor with built-in 4-way USB hub :D
And by the way, it's not a 'pre-built' system like PC World machines in case you haven't guessed. It's totally custom and hand built by me and a family friend (she builds PC's as a business). In my opinion, custom made is WAY better than any pre-built crap on the market at the moment, plus you save yourself a couple of hundered quid of the shops RRP (which is basicly profit and labour costs). :)
I've just bought my new PC and it rocks...
Sony VAIO 3.06 Ghz, 1Gb RAM DVD RW etc.... 128 GFORCE Graphics card.........and Raven Shield online special ops game so if anyone fancies a game let me know....:)

eurgh, Sony.
I hate Sony more than I hate the 8310. They try to be a 'Jack of all trades' which more often than not means you pay an extra 20% for the label, which sucks big time. OUt of interest, how much did you pay for it? I bet you anything I could have got the same stuff for cheaper :)
I bought the base unit seperate and had it reduced from £1600 down to £1200 through bargaining and I bought a seperate flat screen monitor from HP.
I looked all over the place to see if the spec could be beat but with the £400 reduction nowhere else came close.
seems like a good deal kruger
ive got a
2400+ AMD
512mb shitty ram
80gb hard drive
ti4200 128mb
and a nice colourful case
Yep I'm happy with it really wanted something that could handle Multiplayer online gaming which is where PC's really shine over consoles I feel.
So this one should be great....

intersting, does'nt sound like too much of a bad deal. But i still hate Sony :p
What you need to do to see if you got ripped off or not is to add up how much it would've cost if you'd bought the bits seperatley and built it yourself :)
Yp already done this using Gsquared.net works out cheaper my was....but then only because of the reduction I managed to get...

good to see another who see's the benefits of having hand built-pc's over the mass market rip-off pre-made ones ;)
While i build my own to.
I have noticed than recently looking at say a nmesh system if you bought the parts seperately you dont actually save as much as you used to anymore :(
Trouble with some of these Pre-Built jobbies is that, Some companys tend to use cheap Motherboards, Like Graphics and Sound on it, which is ok for low end users like running your home bills on it and basic surfing the net..
But when you want to go for high end games then problems can a-rise, when I removed the side panel, I found what I thought was total rip from H-Packard, Basic Motherboard with no AGP skt, 2 PCI slots and 1 Dimm slot, which broke when we tried to upgrade his Memory, unsuitable Cooler... ( tiny fan for a 1GHZ AMD CPU) Power Pack that wasn't approved, and you could fry an egg off it, it was that hot on top of the case, Cables messed up with no cable ties, Slow HD (5200rpm) (which sounded more like a coffee grinder when accessing...
But the Monitor was ok and and case looked fine from the outside,
Nice Front USB sockets shame they weren't connected to the Motherboard !
And where did he buy it from ? PEE SEE World !
Didn't even come with a full Win98 (was preinstalled) just a recovery disk ..
Ok ok not everybody has a degree in computers, but its well worth learning so you know what is worth its money inside your machine, and not some cheap cack...
There are plenty of computer fairs around the uk to easly pick up some cheap computers and learn what is what and how to replace and how easy it is to upgrade...
OK you might find a cheap computer in the high street for £399 - £999 but do you know if it will be upgradable in 2 years time ?
I've heard stories off friends where they have taken a computer to computer shop and being charged about £30 just because a 50p power switch has failed...
Look on ebay see Good Graphic Cards Geforce's, Nividia Cards
at Great prices Which would make your computer laugh at nearly any top of the range game, but do you know if your AGP skt is compatible ?
Why pay £££ at a computer shop to fit it when a book from the library or information from the internet would cost you nothing,
Yet it would teach you all you would need to know and Save you £££
Amazing your friends when they say I bet that cost a lot to build..
And then watch how they call you a liar when when you tell them, It only cost a small price,
because you built it yourself... :shades:
I would have gone down the self build route if I was more technically minded, but if and when mine goes bang, I'll give you and Daedalus a call (unless he defects to PC world at the weekends, then...:fire: )

You mean Hard Drive space....
So what if its not a top of range system and you can't play all those top of the range Games and Run loads of Applications at the sametime...
At the end of the day it gets you on the net and on to here where you can chat to all us Mobile Geeks Cool eh ! :)
You right life's a bitch ! :bo:
plz don't talk about those games, i'm just addicted to them, and i'm happy i've got an old pc that can't play them, other wise i would be playing 24/7 and not be able to visit the forums
but i'm happy that the money i saved to buy a new pc went to phones for my collection :) i'm hoping i have them all, or alot one day
Some of these phones wll go up in price over the years like the Spectrum ZX81 computer...so your investing :)

if your PC is too old to play games, how are you addicted to games? :conf:
i was adicted to quake 2 online multiplayer (i was one of the best)
jungle war (java multiplayer) was on top list and after the rest of the board i was away for a few months and them i was back going up to the top again and then the server ended.
this might seem nothing, but when you play about 12 hours a day, and sometimes from 20 to 8 o clock in the morging and you have to go to school its really hard :(
Aaah yes you can't beat good olde Quake ...
I've played Quake - QII -QIII - UT - UT2003 - Unreal & 2
Half Life ...
But its Quake III online I always go back too...
Great to have a Mobile version of it... :)
