View Full Version : IrDa Problems

I ordered an IrDa adapter from ebuyer.com, just like Nick's. It turned up yesterday (two days ahead of schedule, pretty good going really) and I got one for a mate, for his 6610.
I haven't heard how he got on with his, but I've been having a sh*t time with mine. I plug it into the USB port, as the manual says, and XP picks it up and auto- installs the drivers for it. Then, i activate infared on the phone and line it up with the adapter. The PC picks it up ok and everything, and then when it's finished piddleing about, I open Nokia Connection Manager to establish a connection with the phone. It picks up the 5100, I click on it and click apply, wait for a bit while the hourglass goes round, and then thats when the trouble starts...
I get halfway through it doing that, or all the way, or not even into opening Connection Manager, and Windows tells me that the connection has been inturupted or the deivce is out of range. Now it'll say this for anywhere from 1 second to 30 seconds, and it'll cut out like that at random for a random ammount of time.
Now, the weird thing is, it work totally fine with my brothers 7110, but has the same problem with my Dad's 5100. I then tried the whole thing again on my mum's PC, and the same thing occured :conf:
And now I'm at wits end trying to figure out what the hell to do. I've established it's not a problem with the IrDa adapter, because the 7110 works fine with it; it's not a problem with the PC because it does the same on my Mum's PC; and it's not a problem with my phone because my Dad's identical phone has the same problem. So, i've virtually condluded it's a conflict between that particular IrDa adapter and that particular model of phone. Plus, the 5100 (both of them) work 100% fine on my Dad's laptop with a built-in IrDa adapter, so it appears to be a conflict just between those two particular devices.
Any ideas? Anyone? :conf:
Hmmm...sounds familiar to me.:pissed:
It's something to do with the Nokia's IR interaction with the PC's IR as you said in your post. I used MobiMB to load up wallpapaers and it keeps stopping half way through the process. I also used Oxygen and that kept on cutting out half way through too. Don't use Nokia Suite now.
The IrDA device I have is a BAFO Vishay 6102F.
What are the settings for your IR device?
1/Infrared transceiver type
2/Min Turnaround time
3/Speed Enable
I changed mine to the fillowing:-
1/SigmaTel 4000 (from Vishay 6102F)
2/ Min Turnaround time 0.5mS ( from 1.0mS DEFAULT)
3/ Speed enable 9600 (from 4000000 DEFAULT)
I read somewhere that you can change speed enable up to 115200 but no higher on the new models (the older ones such as your 7110 will accept the 4000000 setting). That may be while it works with that phone.
Don't forget that a PC with built in IR will ALWAYS work better that a PC with an IR "add-on".
Good luck, it seems to be a case of playing around with the settings until you find a set that works. Sods law dictates that the last set you try works the best.

thanks man, i'll give that a go.
little update tho, my mate tried his, i got this text from him earlier: update to phone isn't given to me as an option.
which i think means he's got it connected (he's using Windown 98 and a 6610) but it wont let him update, or that it wont let him update because it's not connected, i dont know for sure.

:conf: The PC is recognizing his phone, but it won't let him update.
Hmmm, not sure about that one geez. If he's getting a message saying 'Click here to send files to the computer Nokia 6610' at the bottom of the screen then his phone is connecting and the PC recognizes the phone.
Again I read somewhere that there's no problems with the 7210 but for some reason there are on the other Series 40 phones.
Try this for info.

well, it worked...sort of...
if connected, and i could copy the content from the phone. But, I had to do the content copy twice, because the first time, as it closer to the end of doing it, it began to more and more often start saying the connection was lost, but long enough for Nokia Connection Manager to notice, like a split second or something. Then very near the end, it did it long enough for Connection Manager to notice and it refused to go any further :pissed: So, i had to do it all over again, which takes AGES because i've put the transfer speed down to 9600 like you said. It finally did it tho.
But then, i went to upload some ringtones, and every single one uploaded for a few seconds and then said "could not upload ringtone" and refuses to do it properly :conf:
And, according to the PC suite help file, I should have 'Nokia 5100' in the phone browser next to 'My Gallery' which if it was there would allow me to look at the content on my phone. Now, i know it should be there because i've seen it before, but it went again before I could get a proper look
:bo:
by the way, that txt file is exactly the same as the manual I got with mine, tho strangely my mate did'nt have one with his...
@ Daedalus
I have been playing around with the IrDA settings and I think I've cracked it. :wicked:
1/ Set the Infrared transceiver type to Sigmatel 4000
2/ Set the Minimum turnaround time to 1.0mS
3/ Set the speed enable to 57600
I tried it with the trial versions of MobiMB and Oxygen Phone Manager and so far it HAS NOT dropped the connection.
Will keep on testing it
UPDATE
It has still not dropped it's connection. Takes about 5 seconds max. to transfer a picture.

cheers nick, i'll give that a go.
by the way, my mates running 98, and he says theres no option to change the minimum turnaround time or the speed enable, only the transceiver type. any ideas?
Did he install the 98 driver from the supplied CD-Rom??
When I get home tonight I'll have a look and see what options there are.

yeah, he did, but still nothing. i've told him to just keep trying different settings until it does something. and where did you get MobiMB and Oxygen Phone Manager from? i need them to try the new settings, might be better than Nokia Data Suite.
@ Daedalus
Have you got round to trying Nokia Suite or MobiMB yet with the new settings?

yes, and no.
Nokia Data Suite works, in part. I can now upload pictures and ringtones, and I can browse the phones gallery. but, i cant see all of the pictures in the image gallery and i can see barely any of my ringtones in the ringtone gallery :/
AND, it still disconnects when I dont use it. So if it's sitting there and i'm not using it at that time, or i'm using Nokia Suite to edit pictures etc. :pissed:
As for MobiMB, the bloody thing does'nt even run. It'll install (without asking me WHERE i want to even put it) and then when I click on it in the start bar, it says the program does'nt exist and asks me to delete the shortcut :/ So, pretty useless
With the Nokia Suite, I think you have to set up another folder in the Nokia Browser file called 'My 5100'.
As for the Mobi MB, I don't know why it won't work. Maybe there's something NOT in the ZIP file. Leave it to me.

when the phone connects properly, the folder My 5100 appears anyway, which is what I was using to browse the phone.
I found these posts on another forum (sorry kruger, only rooting about for info.) and I reckon they might give a few pointers...
Links gone because they go to that big place in the sky :)
I hope this helps. If it doesn't then I will be damned forever and sentenced to the rest of my life without access to the forum:vsad: :vsad:
PLEASE IGNORE THE ABOVE LINKS, THEY DON'T WORK.

well, i better get the 'Banned book' out, because none of your links work :/
however, i've had a look on their site, and I cant seem to find the post(s) your on about. i've found one where you posted, and some wise guy gave you a dumb answer
I'm going to try and download something like Logomanager, or someother free software, so i'll see how that goes.
Hmmm... they did work. But they don't now. I'll delete the post. Warning points for providing duff links. Sorry.... :hammer: :fire:

heh, ok, just a light tap on the wrist this time :)
Daedalus have you sorted it yet? cos i was looking at the irda on ebuyer and wondered if its all up and running?

yes, it works pretty much ok now.
I have'nt used it in a bit, but when I do it does the job.
I'd say it's pretty good for the money.
excellent....thanks a lot. Is it easy to change backgrounds with it?

yes, much easier than changing the ringtones. Using Nokia data suite you just select a picture on your computer, size it to fit and then upload it to the phone, simple as that (well, most of the time...)

it's been working for months, hence the fact the last post in this thread was in October :)
Anyway, do what I did, turn the speed on the IrDA adapter down, in the settings.
