View Full Version : Why can't 3G phones be made smaller
Why is it that all of the new 3G phones are so big and bulky, why can't they make them the same size as the standard colour camera phones.....surely technology exists to make them smaller....

i thought you'd be smart enough to figure this one out Kruger :)
Think back to when the first 2G phones came out (WAP enabled phones). At a time when the newly released compact 3210 came out, the bulky arkward 7110 came out, not to mention the enourmous 9110, which was essentially the first WAP phone.
It's a similar story today. The 3G phones have to be large because of the technology that's incorperated into them. Most people take for granted how compact they are for what they do, if you include the twin digital video camera (which need more space because of the live video recording), an extremely stong ariel for video calls and 64MB in the e808, not to mention the MP3 player, video recorder, video player, the built in high quality loud speaker and one of the biggest and highest quality colour screens in the industry.
However, for the more vain amoungst you (the largest one, the e808 that I have, is no bigger than a wallet, and you all carry that with you and don't complain, right?) Motorola are releasing a new A835, which could be my perfect phone, so i might just be getting one shortly. Infact, it's even better than the SX1 you want Kruger :) Have a look at it here: http://commerce.motorola.com/consumer/QWhtml/m_a835.html
although the UK '3' version will be silver, but very nice none the less :)

I agree and disagree with Daedalus.
Agreements - Sure, it has to be big because of all the stuff they have cramed in there.
Disagreements - You mention the ugly e808 is the size of a wallet, which we don't moan about carrying around, but we would if we had to carry two!!!!
As I work woth the e606, which itself is also full of stuff, they have still not got it 100%
Did you know the aerial is in the bottom helf of the handset???Yep, the bit you cover witn your hand!!!(Stupid or what.)
And they have seriously cut corners on the Bluetooth stack, meaning it has very basic functionality. You can only use a headset, no communicating with other Bluetooth devices(i think thats the right way around).
Either way, its obvious they rushed to get out there and be the first 3G operator.
I'm staying on 2.5G (GPRS) untill there is more competition and we as consumers demand more.

yes i did know it was on the bottom of the handset, but it's not nessecarily stupid because i never had any signal problems at all with it.
Speaking of which, i think i've actually been dumb enough to loose my e808, I cant find it! How ironic, the one electronic device I loose and it's the largest mobile in production today :)

Never mind.
I work as part of the UK North National Optimisation Team for Hutchison 3G, testing the signal in the North, but as you live in the South I'll have to take your word for it.
It has a small effect on the strength of the signal, and of course it depends on how many people you are sharing the local site with.
We are slowly getting things up and running up here. Haven't spoken to our guys down your end, but no news is good news, right????
