Today microsoft has decided to close its chatrooms because of the danger to children.
What do you think of chatrooms? innocent fun or is there something too sinister about them?

I think its a good idea but they are also going to save themselves a lot of money...which many believe is the real reaon they are closing them down.

I'm all for keeping them open but only if they can use official details like a credit card or maybe send the password to your home address......

I agree with kruger, especially the saving money bit. And I've never used a chat room before.

But it's just so easy nowadays to infiltrate these chat rooms and prey on younger members by pretending you're someone else. I mean I could log on as you somewhere couldn't I?? (BTW I won't)

In a 100% controlled environment they're OK, but I think Microsoft are doing the right thing.

actually, Microsoft claim they'll loose £1-£2 million if they close them, as they will loose the adverts that are on the chatrooms

Do you think Yahoo\Lycos and the like will also be doing the same thing over the coming months ?

I think eventually they will all be closing down, and using just subscription chatrooms. Not sure it is totally for the reasons advertised either...................

as long as they don't close down the MSN Messenger service, fine by me... I didn't use their chatrooms anyway :)
