The new Nokia 7600 is Nokia's second 3G phone, featuring WCDMA, dual-band GSM, a large 16-bit colour display, VGA camera, Bluetooth and MP3 playback capabilities.

Launched in conjunction with the 100% Design exhibition in London, Nokia today announced the rather unusually shaped Nokia 7600 phone as its second 3G phone. Running on Nokia's Series 45 platform, the device incorporates a 16-bit (65, 536 colours) screen and offers functionality such as capturing pictures and videos, sending and receiving multimedia messages, mobile e-mail and listening to music.

Operating in GSM900/1800 as well as WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) networks, the Nokia 7600 is expected to be available in volume in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia-Pacific in fourth quarter of 2003. WCDMA is a third-generation mobile wireless technology offering data transfer speeds and better quality of service to mobile and portable wireless devices than current mobile networks.

The Nokia 7600 features an integrated VGA digital camera with a resolution of 0,3 megapixels, as well as a colour display capable of showing up to 65,536 colours at a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The handset will be able to capture both pictures and video clips with audio, of up to 2,5 minutes in length each. In a WCDMA network, it will also be possible to send and receive video clips and pictures during phone calls.

An integrated MP3/AAC music player is according to Nokia capable of offering up to 50 minutes of near CD-quality music saved in the internal memory of the device. Music and other content can be downloaded using mobile services while on the move or locally from a compatible PC via infrared, Bluetooth or USB connection. Through its XHTML browser, Nokia 7600 users will also be able to browse graphically rich mobile services.

Other features of the phone include polyphonic ring tones, support for J2ME applications and a data connection speed of up to 384 kilobits per second in WCDMA networks. Moreover, Bluetooth support is also present, and users will be able to personalize the device through exchangeable side pieces which will be available in a variety of colours. The main piece of the unit, featuring its unusual keypad design, cannot be personalized.

The Nokia 7600 is listed as offering up to 4 hours of talk time in GSM networks and up to 2,9 hours in WCDMA, with a stand-by time of up to 12,5 days in both networks. Weighing a mere 123 grams and measuring 87 x 78 x 18.6 mm, the Nokia 7600 ranks as one of smallest GSM/WCDMA phones in the world.

A limited edition series of 1,000 Nokia 7600 phones in special sales packages will be available through a selection of high-quality lifestyle shops in Europe, including Conran Shop (London), Asplunds (Stockholm), Colette (Paris), Corso Como 10 (Milan), Vincon (Barcelona), Quartier 206 (Berlin), and Wittgenstein (Munich).

i never usually say this about a phone, but, that is THE worst design I have ever seen. I mean, it's ridiculasly impractical and would be impossilbe to hold comfortably when using one hand and the 5-way rocker keys, it'd just fall out of your hand :/ very weird...
and whats weirder is, I did'nt see it coming! Usually i get a chance to see phones, especailly Nokia's, early on and on some websites I get to see rumours and previews, but this popped up out of thin air.
Hmm, i'm loosing my touch
*hangs head in shame* ;)
