TESCO Mobile passed the half-million subscriber mark this Christmas, less than 14 months since the Tesco-O2 joint venture’s full launch in 2003.

The MVNO has maintained a steady rate of growth after achieving 250,000 subscribers in its first seven months, but is still only a quarter of the way to its initial target of two million subscribers. However, the MVNO has not revealed a timescale for reaching this base.

Tesco sells prepay handsets from 500 of its stores across the UK, and began trialling sales of Sim packs from ten Tesco Express stores and online in December.

The MVNO has claimed that one of its customers activated a handset every three seconds on Christmas Day – which is equivalent to around 29,000 new customers in one day alone.
Andy Dewhurst, Tesco Mobile chief executive, said: ‘We were determined to keep things simple and customer-focussed and these results are testament to that.

‘We want to make it as convenient as possible for customers to get access to our mobile network, and expanding into Express stores and developing our online offer are obvious ways for us to achieve this.’
