I would rather have just 2MB than all the associated c**p that comes with AOHELL ;)

Have also just read that they will be giving me a 15GB limit (at the moment I have no limit) but thats not a problem really as I have never got anywhere near that figure in a month.

So are you going to be eligible for the free upgrade to 2MB?? Would be good if you are.

And think how much faster all those Ozzy downloads are going to be from Thursday ;)

I heard about it at work today, sounds pretty good.

Nildram (who we're with) upgraded ours from 1MB to 2MB and lifted the 30GB limit to unlimited. Not sure how much it costs though, but I'm sure its competitive to the leading companys.

I did a quick comparison of the services available in the village I live in and of all the ISP's available (only 4 - BT, Virgin, AOHELL and one that is run by a local company) the BT one was the best.

Krug3r - no mention of AOHELL 4mb

bunny

AOhell.......still the same hassle but 4 times faster lol.

Apparently the newest AOL software (for BB anyway) allows you to use Internet Explorer rather than AOL's browser because it has a seperate 'connection' tool.

Still crap if you ask me tho ;)

I may not get half the stuff with BT broadband that I would get with AOHELL. (I am on the non-yahoo version, when I signed up I got the modem and the connection and that was it). But I prefer the 'simple' approach to things like this. I do some downloading, use MSN and generally 'surf the net' and have no need for all the other 'junk' that other ISP's offer in ther packages, most of which I would probably never ever use

Bt have upgraded me already, the download speeds are really impressive.....so im a happy bunny :)

Yaaayyyyyyyy!!!!

Sooner than expected.

Did you have to install anything off a disk?

bunny
16-02-2005, 18:31
no i didnt.......the disc isnt due to arrive till tomorrow so i was wondering if i need bother with the disc as i have everything working and set up nicely :)

But i was thinking is this the upgrade i ordered or is this the free upgrade?

nick

I would think that it is the upgrade that you asked them to do. Only cos the free upgrades they are doing don't start till tomorrow. I may be wrong though, a call to CS may be worth making.

If it is working OK without any disk then I wouldn't bother with it when they send it to you. I never had a disk when mine was upped to 1MB, it was all done at the exchange and apart from when I have visited BUGS (you know what I mean by that ;) ) it has run very smoothly.

bunny
16-02-2005, 18:55
my speed is....1152000bps, thats what it says when i hover over the icon in my tray, whats that 1MB?

nick
16-02-2005, 19:02
Same as mine bunny, thats 1MB.

So thats not the free upgrade you got.

But keep an eye on it over the next few days, I wouldn't be surprised to see that figure double.

bunny

im well pleased with it :) my download speeds are around 100 -120 (things??? dont know is it KB?)

nick
16-02-2005, 19:36
Thats about the right sort of speed.....

I think the fastest I have ever had something download is about 120ish... having said that I have also had stuff download at dial-up speeds.

Its kbps (KiloBytes Per Second).

On thursday i installed the BT/Yahoo for my go faster BB........what a load of rubbish....totally messed up my settings and everything, error messages everywhere...according to BT tho i HAD to run this pile of junk software if i wanted a faster connection, this didnt make much sense so i took the whole lot off and lo and behold my connection has still stayed at the faster speed.........sometimes i think BT dont know their @rse from their elbow.

nick
19-02-2005, 23:27
They obviously don't, cos the connection speed is increased at the exchange.

I suggest you use the CD as a drinks mat - a mug of coffee fits on them perfectly. :)

bunny

it is the most awful software imaginable (apart from musicmatch ;) ) it hogs so much memory and then you have to connect to the internet and then sign in to the browser with a different name and password....the software seems really buggy and slow to respond too....give me plain old internet explorer anyday :)

nick
20-02-2005, 19:50
AOhell.......still the same hassle but 4 times faster lol.

Wonder if 4 times faster means 4 times more trouble

BTW if you go to http://www.bt.com/btbroadband/ns_home.jsp and enter your postcode in the yellow box on the left it will tell you if you can have 2MB BTBB enabled on your line.

bunny
20-02-2005, 20:00
thanks for the link, i did wonder if i could get 2MB.....but i cant :)

nick
20-02-2005, 20:05
Thats a shame.. still, some people can't even get BB can they? ;)

bunny
20-02-2005, 20:08
no i dont think its a shame, im really not bothered, after all its only a short time ago i was on dial up, and to go from that to 1mb for me is brilliant.....a typical 4mb download only takes me around 30 seconds so im more than happy with that :)

nick
03-03-2005, 22:03
Have now been upgraded to 2MB

But my PC keeps disconnecting :nervous:

bunny
03-03-2005, 22:25
i had the same prob.....was told it was a power management thing, try putting your usb cable in one of the back usb ports or failing that get a self powered usb hub.....it worked for me :)

nick
03-03-2005, 22:27
I will have a try at that, it has DC'd three times since I last posted

nick

All seems OK now. No dropped connections and everything running smoothly. Tried bunny's tip about using a different USB port - and as normal she came up trumps!!!!! :slick:

But I can't detect much difference though between the 1MB and 2MB speed. Downloads seem to be at a similar speed, and some pages take just as long to load up as they did before.

Just saw this on Google News

Broadband speeds could soon reach new heights as cable operator NTL pilots ADSL2+ — a technology that offers a maximum download speeds of 18Mbps.

Such rates are only possible over short distances, but NTL says that 95 percent of homes are within one kilometre of its high-speed fibre network. This means ADSL2+ should run at high speeds over the copper wire that runs between NTL's roadside cabinets and individual homes.

"The field trials are to determine the technological potential of these next-generation broadband services and evaluate the operational benefits of ADSL2+," said an NTL spokesman. "Our fibre-rich network means that we have the potential to provide customers with multiple services through a single high-speed IP connection."

The company also been testing streaming of high-definition broadcasts over its IP fibre network.

BT is planning to begin trialling ADSL2+ this year. However, only a small proportion of its customers live within one kilometre of their local telephone exchange, which could limit BT's ADSL2+ top speeds. Few details of BT's ADSL2+ trial have been released as yet.

BT's wholesale division is also about to begin trialling ADSL at speeds up to 8Mbps — a four-fold increase on its current top speed. However, it is likely that only homes and businesses within a few kilometres of their local telephone exchange will be able to get such rates.

I can't get NTL cos the bloody Parish Council refused them permission to dig the pavements up. Which is a shame cos I had someone from NTL call this evening offering 4MB BB for £29 a month.

But I do only live 500 metres away from the local BT exchange.. I wonder......
