View Full Version : quick broadband question
i am looking to buy an answerphone....the amount of calls i get is driving me up the wall so i want to screen them as most of them are from companies selling loans or kitchens etc.....despite having my name removed from the list they still come.
What i was wondering was if i get an answer machine will it affect my broadband at all? i ask as when i was on dial up i had bt's 1471 and was advised by bt themselves to remove it as apparently that was the cause of the problems i had with dial up....and once it was removed from my line the problems eased off a bit.......so i was wondering if any of you use an answer machine with broadband? and if so do you have any probs?
No it wont, as the answer machine will work on the phone side of the BT line and not the BB side.
We have one here and never experienced any probs with it.
You could use BT's 1571 service - after about 10 seconds the phone stopes ringing and the person on the other end of the line can leave a message. To hear the messages just dial 1571 on the handset. Might be a bit easier (and cheaper too).
No probs whatsoever the phone and BB as Nick says is completely seperate - we use 1571 and caller ID works well.
soz it was 1571 i meant and not 1471....will get an answer machine then....thanks both.

I'd recommend an answerphone over 1571 anyday, especially if you wanted to screen your calls and choose to answer them in the middle of a message.
Only one problem, trying to find one. We've stopped selling them at work, have'nt sold them in quite a while really, not on their own anyway.
Plus considering their a one off payment of less than £25, its cheaper in the long run than 1571 (i think you have to pay quarterly for it).
ive seen a fair few cordless/ answerphone combos around in Argos, but they only do two standalone answer phones so it will be best for me to buy a cordless phone/ answer phone combo.
I have to say i didnt like 1571 when i had it before, i dont remember paying for it as i think it was free altho it may have changed since.

I registered with these, its a government thing where they put your number on a database and companies are NOT allowed to use your number for cold-calling etc. If they do phone you its ...
Hi are you interested in buying ....
No, i'm interested how you got my number because i'm TPS registered ...
erm .. Sorry to trouble you

or the best thing to do is get their company name first before you tell them ;)
You should reflect on the fact that registering may well prevent you from receiving information which you would really like to have - thereby cutting you off from relevant and worthwhile opportunities.
If you are happy to receive telemarketing calls from some companies but not others, contact the companies who you do not wish to hear from and ask them to remove your details from their call lists. Registering your telephone number on TPS will stop telemarketing calls from all companies, not just some!
I registered the home phone number with this service, and now we very rarely get a call of this nature.
I love it when you do, because you know they've just randomly got your number from a phonebook etc. they can't get off the phone quick enough when you tell them lol
i rang talk talk up a month or so ago and registered with someone or other....but still they keep coming......still only had eight so far today :(

i used to get these calls until i registered my number, the calls that realy got to me were the one's done randomly by computer because most of the time there was just silence on the line. my 1st thought was " heavy breather" 2nd thought was has my hubby got a bit on the side!!!!
i know.....i get loads of either silent calls or calls where as soon as i answer the other end hangs up.
