The components, the operating system, the compatibility of programs, sometimes the stability, the performance, the cost.

Thats about all I know on the matter, but I dont know which is more of which :)

Macs are supposed to be better, well all the W@Mob gadgetboys seem to have them so they must be.

Macs are made by Apple, and use their own operating system which is supposed to be less prone to the problems Microsoft have with their software.

They also look a damn site better than most of the PC's but you pays the price for it at purchase.

Plus its a completely new operating system, it takes a lifetime to get used to if you've used Windows all your life, and the mice only have one button!

I could never use one one a regular basis. Besides, its Crapple so I would'nt buy it :)

even i know they are made by apple lol.....and i dont think you need anti virus but apart from that i dont know anymore so i thought someone on here might know......and i agree they look really nice, even better than the alienware :)

You still need a virus guard really, just theres far less virusses than PC's around for them.

Plus, only leading brand software seems to work with Macs, and even then it has to be specially designed for them. You always have to make sure the box says "Mac Compatible", which can be a pain.

it seems like everything is centered around windows, why do the mice only have one button though?.....and whats wrong with apple? you dont like them no?

No, I feel about them like I feel about Sony, or pretty much anyway. Its the whole 'iPod' thing. Before that I considered them cool, now their too popular and practically everyone has one, most people have one and never use them.

i have to admit i dont go a great deal on the ipod, even tho they have dropped in price. What would you say then D is your favourite brand for audio? i have to admit i really like Sony, especially the atrac system although it takes ages to convert mp3 to the atrac format, but at the same time it will let me convert mp3's i have downloaded but not the tracks from a Thin Lizzy disc that i bought!
My Zen micro isnt bad but its not what i would call 'stable'.

I would say Creative, but that'd be biased :)

Although I go for sound quality with loudspeaker type systems, like hifi's and PC speakers etc (and to a certain degree portable devices), things with headphones tend not to worry me quite so much, or I dont spend hours looking over the sound quality reviews.

My Creative, in my opinion sounds excellent, especially as thats their main product line, sound devices (PC speakers, soundcards, MP3 players), so they know what their doing.

I chose it because it was the best value for money, met all my needs and was small. And I still stand by the fact that they are. I feel that the Apple, Sony and i-River ones are far too expensive, and the cheapo 'stick' flash-based ones by unknown companies might not stand up to the job, although their ok for low users.

Plus the MuVo plays all the formats I use (never used aac or atrac myself) and is used mainly as a USB HDD besides listening to music.

Thing is, if I'm buying something like a DVD player or suggesting a hifi to someone, I'd NEVER go ANYWHERE near Alba, Bush, Goodmans, Matshui (sp?), JMC and all those cheapy ones you get in the bargin bins. Their really not worth the hassle unless you dont mind pretty poor audio/video quality :/

I know what you mean about the cheaper ones.......i only found out recently that the audio players by ministry of sound are made by alba (whom i hate) alba also make the packard bell mp3 players and alba and goodmans are all the same company so people are paying a higher price for say ministry of sound when in fact they are alba's in disguise.

I agree with you about creative the sound on the zen is pretty good with enough bass to keep me happy and yet before i returned the zen touch back to argos i wasnt at all impressed by the sound quality on it at all.

Wow, never knew that about Alba, guess I'll be steering clear of Packard Bells and Ministry of Sound devices now, even tho I was never really a fan of them besides their style.

noooooo, I have a Grundig TV! I never knew they were owned by Alba, my Dad told me they were owned by Philips when I was buying it :(

Strange how NTL and Cable & Wireless are both on there, I thought they were competing companies?....

Also strange how Goodmans and Bush are on there twice with different logo's....

i bet we would be amazed if we really knew who made what for who ;)

Daedalus

Exactly.

For example, most of the mobile phone market is made up of phones made by different manufacturers, but lots of them share parts with others. The current 65 range of Siemens phones has their OS developed by Sony Ericsson, and most Siemens phones are made from parts by other companies, like their U15 and U10 phones that were never released in this country but were re-badged versions of the Moto A830 and A835.

And Moto had a model called the T400 or something like that that was a clone of the Sharp GX10. The list of component sharing is endless.

Found this about the MACs... might be useful

Basically a MAC is a super-slick Power PC processor based PC that runs Unix with a nice Windows
and folder driven front end, nothing too different from XP there or a PC running Linux.

The big difference comes in the way the operating system loads only the code that it needs to run that particular app and with a few shared libraries that make up a basic C++ engine thats it whereas windows is a mass of DLL's and other chinks of code that are very open to manipulatiopn and infection.

The basic operation of a MAC agains an XP PC is not that different, sure it looks and feels slightly different but the principles are still the same. The big downside for most PC users is that the absolute mass of software both cost and no cost available for your Wintel kit simply isnt available for the Mac.

i have just been looking at them on pc world and i think i will stick to windows!! they look so confusing, nothing like the ones i remember from a couple of years back, plus the cost of a windows based pc seems so much more resonable than the apple offerings.

Daedalus

Prolly mostly because Apple realised after releasing the iPod that people will pay daft ammounts for style.

i was looking on another forum and somebody was bumping their gums on how brilliant the Apple mini (think it was called that)was so i thought id have a look.....all it looks like is a small white box!

will deffo stick with windows :)

Daedalus
14-04-2005, 22:02
It is, its the same as the 'barebones' PC's you can get for cheap, but it costs more :/

Plus if you want a half decent one you have to bump up the specs.

Plus it does'nt come with anything besides the computer, just the box...

Daedalus

Had an Alba Hi-fi before, wen you turned the volume up a tad the volume kept automatically increasing getting louder and louder (at that point you've woken everyone up and pulled out the power cord...!)

ntl and 'Cable and Wireless' are the same company so ive read (ntl acquired them in 1999). I've got ntl cable (and it's crap! Keeps freezin and the tv guides never refresh).

Ipods are the best jukeboxes out at the mo cuz the user interface is the easiest to use. Creative Zen Micro's are wkd tho (luvin the glowing lights!). I bought a stupid Phillips Jukebox (the white one), woz very flimsy and the backlight on the screen kept flickering. Had to return it and (thank god) got a full refund. Instead i bought a Sony Ericsson wit the money :D (never regret it!).
