View Full Version : Dvd recorders
My old video recorder has near enough had it and i was looking to buy a dvd recorder, the only thing is i know nothing at all about them.
I want one basically to record things off the tv and then to be able to play the disc in my dvd player. Do all the recorders work with all the dvd players if you know what i mean? can you play back the discs on the recorder and different players, or would it only play on the machine i recorded it off?
I am totally confused about dvd plus and dvd minus  so does anybody have any advice as to which type of machine to buy?
I think i have suceeded in confusing myself here never mind anyone else :(

to be honest, never been that savvy with home DVD recorders, mainly because we use Sky+, and while the rest of my family would swear by it over DVD recorders, I personally don't (mainly because of the reliability issues).
Anyway, DVD-R and DVD+R, along with DVD-RAM are the main types of recorder/disc media you can buy. The most common ones tend to be DVD-R and DVD+R. As far as I know, DVD-R is the only one that will play back in standard DVD players.
Also, you mentioned recording them on the DVD recorder and playing them on your DVD player. I'll say this much now, if you get a DVD recorder it will render your DVD player useless, as it plays DVD's like a normal DVD player too, just like a CD Recorder.
Other than that I dont know a great deal on the subject, but personally if I ever get some kind of recording device for my TV (when I get the bloomin' reception sorted out...) then I'd prolly get a HDD Recorder (Hard Disk Drive Recorder), which is basically a hard drive like from your PC in a box that sits under your telly. Rather than keep putting in and taking out blank DVD's, this will let you record everything straight to the box and it stays there. Not idea if you want to move it somewhere else though. But you simply put it on the channel you want to record and press the record button, just like a DVD recorder or VHS recorder. Difference is it uses a hard drive rather than DVD's or tapes.

i know currys where doing one for 99.99 but i think it`s back up now to 119.99
ive never heard of the hard disc ones before D.........but they sound pretty good, are they available in somewhere like currys? i have never been able to use video recorders as to me they are complicated things even with video plus.
I am going for a look on saturday so i thought id try and find out a bit about them rather than let the salesman talk me into something that i dont need. I have been saving the equivalent money since i gave up the ciggies back in June so i thought id treat me to something nice:)

Dont know if Currys/Dixons will have hard drive recorders, but dabs.com had one for around £125 or so last time I checked. Own brand but seems like it'll do the job, I almost bought one myself but the signal's so poor its not worth it yet :(
