SonyEricsson will release its latest smartphone, the P900, later this month. Although unofficially launched at the time of writing, the P900 will supersede SonyEricsson's P800, the most popular phone-based PDA on the market in the UK.

The P900 is based on the same Symbian OS as the P800, but offers a better screen, revised software and a less garish design. In particular, the P800's bulky convex shape has been revised to smaller case with an integrated - and removable - flip cover, which helps to make the phone smaller (117x57x27mm) and lighter (130g).
The phone now uses a dark and silver plastic case, opposed to the blue and silver-white of the P800, which gives it a more business look. The keys are also chromium-plated and have no contact with the phone's screen, unlike with the P800. The phone can also be used with the keypad open or closed - when the keypad is closed the 208x320-pixels screen resolution is adjusted to 208x208-pixels to fit the smaller space.
Hardware controls of the phone include an infrared port, on/off key, 5-way JogDial for navigating between and within applications and a hands-free connector. There's also a Memory Stick Duo card slot, which should come in handy for capturing images using the integrated VGA (640x480 pixels) digital camera, or for storing MP3 tracks. Lastly, there's a recess for storing the phone's matching stylus.
Software built into the phone lets you lets you create and read SMS and MMS messages, as well as send and receive e-mails. You can also add photos, video and sounds to these types of messages where supported. CIC's JotPro lets you hand write notes, while on the phone, using the stylus. Other applications include Contacts (supports voice tags), Calendar,To-do list, Video (supports MPEG-4),Music Player (supports MP3, AMR, AU, WAV and MIDI), Voice memo (digital dictation),Calculator, Time (world clock) and Viewer, for viewing the contents of a Memory Stick. There's also a program for capturing photographs and videos, as well as a utility for storing and managing your digital images.
The P900's closet rival, the Treo 600, should arrive in the UK towards the end of next week.
