Bill Gates believes Xenon console can overtake PlayStation
Microsoft chief Bill Gates believes his company's next generation Xbox has what it takes to beat the market leading Sony PlayStation.
With both Microsoft and Sony due to release the new versions of their consoles over the coming months, Microsoft chairman Gates told journalists that the team developing the console are convinced it can take top position.
The new Xbox, codenamed Xenon, will be more of a 'digital entertainment hub' than a simple console, offering many functions more usually associated with PCs. Xenon will be previewed in an MTV half-hour special later this month. It will increase the opportunity for multi-player gaming over the internet, making the most of increasing broadband connections.
Gates said that Xbox had earned the software giant the opportunity to "play again". He added: "Our goal in the last generation was to be in the game."We came out of this round a strong No 2."
The MTV launch will give Xenon a high profile ahead of a key US gaming event where Sony will announce details of the PlayStation 3.
The prospect of new console launches and high profile sales campaigns from the market leaders will be welcome news to retailers tackling a sluggish market.
