unlock phone

i got an unlock phone from my uncle for my B-day, but i dont know how it works :conf:, it doesnt have a SIM card slot, so how should i get it connect to a network???
can anyone help me with this?

It should have somewhere to place the SIM unless its a land line :)

It may an old analogue phone in which case i don't know how you get it connected with a provider in the states?! sorry :(
