Do you think that in the future there will be an affect of the public's writing due to the slang being text?

Personally i do because i have found myself writing "u" instead of "you" in letters.

I think it might. I mean, it was bad enough that not so long ago, kids were writing 'SA' instead of essay, because they though that's how it was spelt. But i dont reckon it'll be long before the English departments of schools begin to work overtime to correct it.

I don't think so, IM has been out for a long time and slang has developed for it, yet when you sit and write a formal essay for school you write 'you' instead of 'u' etc. I agree that it might pop out as 'u' at first, but it won't really make writing worse :)

I think that it will have its time and its place.

The notion that it will overrule the way we speak is silly; not gonna happen.

You write according to your situation and audience.

well, funnily enough I was reading someones Media Studies project from last year, and she had written 'u' instead of 'you' all the way through it, so it just goes to show it does affect spelling.
I mean, this girl was 17/18 and she still managed to fill her A level project with it.
