SALES of 3g mobile phones have risen fivefold following the decision of 3, the new entrant operator, to cut its monthly tariffs.

Carphone Warehouse, the UK’s largest mobile phone retailer, said sales of the handsets, which enable always-on, high-speed internet access, had "exploded" since the new pricing system was introduced.

Hutchison, which is owned by Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa, is reportedly selling around 15,000 handsets per week, compared with around 3,000 before the tariffs were cut.
