View Full Version : Any advice on these mobiles?
OK, so I'm thinkin of geting a new mobile, and have come up with the following 5:
Nokias 6100, 6610, 7210
sharp GX10i
motorola T720i
Been looking at the various features of them, and am kinda unsure which one to opt for, so can anyone with experience with any of these, of who knows much about them advise me on them?, eg the +'s and -'s of them?
I was wondering when they came out, are the all reletevly new, or soon to be replaced?
any advise appreaciated :D
Hi Eee-Tee welcome to the forums.
Could you let us know a little more about what sort of features you are looking for in a phone with say a score between 1 and 5, 5 being the most important.
So for example....
Size 5
GPRS 3
Colour 5
Poly Tone 4
Battery Life 2
and so on....this way we can steer you in a better direction...
Kruger, thanks for your reply, to give you an idea, the things that I'm wantin from the phone are as follows (out of 10- 1 unimportant, 10 v imp)
size 8
ease of use 7
poly ring tones 6
games 7
durable 8
bat life 6
colour screen- good size 9
large (ish) range of xtra features 6
camera function 8
as for anything else, such as surfing the net/ wap, these are all things that i'd like to use, but are't as imp as those above
This any help?
If your looking for the camera functionality there's only one phone that does this on your list built in...not too sure about the others maybe attachments needed which can be a real pain to carry about etc......
The sharp GX10i, which is a nice phone but I think its getting a little dated now.
The Nokias all seem to have a great array of features including the tri band option and GPRS access with multi poly tones and java games.
I've always found Nokias a good phone for general ease of use.....and they tend to be pretty reliable, although some of their earlier models have been known to be a bit buggy.
There are quite a few other phones out that would also compliment your needs......Samsungs new V200, the Sony Ericsson P800 is agreat phone....a little big though.....and also the Nokia 7650 but again the size lets it down.....
Another one of our members works in the Link and I'm sure he will also have more to say being more of an expert in this field than me.......but there's some food for thought for now....
:D
Finally as far as being replaced....the way the market is going at the mo you'll be lucky to buy a phone that isn't due to be replaced within a few short months........its sometimes better to go for a slightly older model thats been proven and tested in the general market place as being reliable.
Lastly do you have any cost restrictions.....this can play a big part....

i think Krugers right about those phones, their all quite good.
I have'nt really had a chance to have a go with the GX-10i yet, but it's not that much different to the original. it's still quite chunky and the only major difference between the two is the Tri-Band feature (allowing you to use it in the USA).
The colour Nokia's running the 40-series OS (7210, 7250, 6610 etc.) tend to be good, but they can be slow and blurry in terms of general use. The screens used on most, if not all, Nokias is a 4096 colour STN screen, meaning they can be blurry, out of focus, hard to see in sunlight (believe me, i've got one). Plus they all only have 4-tone polyphonics, which is ok, but i depends on how much of an issue that is for you.
The Samsung V200 is good, but, it's a Samsung, and having used it, it does have the same old Korean problem of slow key responses (in case no one got that, Samsung is a Korean manufacturer). It does have the best screen and camera tho, but bear it mind it's got a flip (*shudders*)....
There is one new contender thats out soon, and i'm very impressed by it considering the companys history. In recent months, Sagem has done a Skoda, their now making classy phones that have everything in them at an affordable cost for everyone. (Heck, even their slogan has something to do with 'new technology available for everyone') The new My-X6 is amazing to be honest. Some how, Sagem have come up with a corker of a phone that squeezes in a large (similar in size to that of the Panasonic GD87) 65,000 colour TFT screen (one of the best around), Bluetooth & Infrared, a built in camera capable of a 640x480 resolution using a CCD sensor instead of the regular ones used in camera phones (meaning this is a camera that compares with those sub-£100 digital cameras!), a sliding lens cover, changable clip on covers, 40-tone polyphonic ringtones (the best yet), ringtone support for Midi, Wave, i-melody and AMR (the Wave bit means you can have real music as ringtones, real sounds and everything, not just some polyphonic speaker!), Java games using the aclaimed In-Fusio gaming engine (the PlanetSagem website apparently shows some form of the classic PC shooter, Wolfenstien 3D!), MMS, EMS, 2.3 MB of space (!) and picture calling, so you can take a photo of someone, and assign them to a name and number in the phone book, so when it calls, you can literaly see who it is!
And best of all, it's not a flip phone (yay!!), which is a god send when your in a hurry, or if you've got an arm full of shopping and your phone rings (believe me, with a flip phone they'll be shopping all over the floor before you answer it)
go to www.sagem.com for more info.
Anyway, enough ranting of how good that phone is
other than that, theres the T610, which is'nt bad, but if a bit more pricey than the Sagem, but a great phone none the less.
out of the ones you've listed, the 6610 is probably the best Nokia, although it is discontinued, so you might have to look about a bit first.
The Motorola? avoid it. to put it simply it's not the best phone in the world. The camera's 'pan and scan' is so slow you'll have gotten board before you take the first picture and the menu is a little short of dull and tiring. having said that, it does have a few good features, such as the camera, screen, poly tones, handsfree speaker etc., but it's just not worth it. (don't tell my friend that, i sold one to her on contract not long ago, but only because she wanted the best phone for no money)
And the Sharp GX10i? well, i've said about that above :)
The P800 is'nt THAT big really, it's smaller than most PDA's, but smaller than say......a house brick
Anyway, it's up to you at the end of the day, but i do warn you these few things:
1. Sharp GX10i's and GX10's are EXCLUSIVE to Vodafone, meaning you'll be stuck on Voda if you buy one
2. ALWAYS, and i mean ALWAYS, test drive a phone before buying it. Theres nothing worse than buying a phone, getting all exciting, getting it home, you can't wait to play with it, and it turns out to be a turd. Spend a good 15-25 minutes with the phone, and test all the features out. Prefably ask to put your simcard in so you can send a few texts, make a few calls etc, just to see how you'd like it in day to day use.
so, basicly, it's up to you, but i'd advise you use my advice (is there some kind of joke in that? i can't tell, i'm tired.....).
Thanks for your replies- Daedalus, that's a lotta good info!
I'm thinkin of getting which ever phone from ebay, it'll be unlocked, but then again, i might not-
Any advise on this?
With regards to pricing, i looked at pretty much every phone, and the above 5 suited my pocket best, as, if i do get it from ebay, i'm hoping to spend - £200, hopefully a bit less
Been to your collegues at the link, and of course, tried to get me having another phone....anyway, had a look at them 'in the flesh', and its kinda confused me more as to which one to get
This is what i'm thinkin, at the mo:
6100/6610 smaller than 7210, but this one has the radio which i'd find useful
- so the motorola's pretty well out?, Ok, so what about the GX10i, for a clamshell, it seemed quite big?
I'm by noway a heavy user, but i want a quality phone with a wide range of 'extras'
How does the size of the 7210 c/f other, similar mobiles?
I've kinda forgotten, they all merge into one....
So whilst i'm thinkin all this thriugh, plz keep yoor input on these phones comming in
The 6610 has been discontinued??
Didn't know that. Glad I got the 6100 then.
If he can't get a 6610, try the 6100. Its a very good phone (oesn't have a radio though) and there's some wicked offers on it at the moment.
I did look at both the GX10/i and the T610. The T610 reminded me of a brick and the GX's would have tied me into Vodafone and as I can't stand Man Utd., that was enough of a reason for me not to get one.
Have just had a look at the Sagem site and I can quite sadly say I wish I'd had a look at that MYX-6 it looks like a cracking package. Ok its not a mainstream name, but hey, its a phone.
As for the T720i - PANTS!!!! I had a go on my sisters and would gladly give it to the dog for its dinner.
GO FOR THE 6100 OR MY-X6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

great advice from asphaltic99 there, looks like we could have quite an asset here :)
anyway's, ebay is ok, but it's probably not the best option. you can't always guarentee that i'll be new, or un opened, or even un used. and theres little you can do if i t goes wrong.
i'd advise going here : www.simfreedirect.co.uk/simfree
here you'll find most phones at trade prices (7210 for about £200 brand new etc.)
The 6610 and 6100 are different phones Eee-Tee, it just seemed lilke you thought they were the same :)
anyway, if you want a good phone for around £200 you can't go wrong with the 6610. Bear in mind tho, the 6610/7210 will only take low-res pictures with the camera, where as the 6100 will take high quality pictures (much better :)). Also the 6100 has about half the memory in it for ringtones, logo's games etc. : /
The GX-10i is good, but you won't find it for under £300 sim free, and their usually locked to Vodafone (even the some of the ones on ebay, so watch out).
other than that, i'd recommened the 6610 over the 7210, or the 6100 over the 7210, but either is good.
You learn something new every day.
I didn't know the 6100 took better pics than the 6610..:) Whats the difference????
Or that it had less memory :(
I was bidding for a camera on Ebay. But got outbid at £21!!!!!
PS daedalus---- me an asset???
Should be grateful cos I've been called worse things!
