Nokia 6230 Review
First Impressions
Even my sister agrees that this phone is good, but it’s missing a sparkle… The Nokia 6230 is a sophisticated business class phone with near enough all the features you’d need, but what about the wants. Well, I suppose the first thing that came into my mind was that the 6230 looked powerful. It looked like a serious grown-up mobile as apposed to being fun and entertaining. But it failed to really captivate me as a user…

Camera
Better then most other non-mega pixel Nokia camera phones, the VGA camera with 640x480 resolution took pictures of a good quality. One huge advantage for buying Nokia phones is the Night Mode feature which remains unbeaten, for this phone it’s not an exception. Shots taken in dark lighting conditions develop well, better than others. Like most of its relatives, the shutter sound can be turned off. There are three quality settings, High, Normal and Basic.

Videos
Recorded in 3GP format, quality of videos compared to other mobiles are on par. But because of the small screen it can be annoying to watch videos and even look at pictures with. Night Mode can be used when recording video, sound is also captured. There are no camera effects (such as Sepia, Negative or Black and White).
Ringtones
Because this phone has a large expandable memory, you can store loads of your favourite MP3 tracks and set them as your ring tone. You never have to worry about whether or not you’re using up too much space. Of course, it supports MIDI and AMR tones. Ring tones are loud and of a good quality. This is one of the features I’m impressed with.

Media Player
You might want to use the phone as an MP3 player, but of course you wouldn’t be able to do this without the Media Player. With this you’re able to select and create a play list. You can also change equalizer settings which is most effective when listening with a Nokia stereo headset. The player can be minimized whilst playing so you can carry out other tasks simultaneously.
Display
As mentioned above, with a phone that has different media features you’d expect the phone to have at least a slightly bigger screen. But you could look at it at a different perspective, other features such as Bluetooth, Infra-red and an MMC slot make up for it. The screen is ok when viewed in the sunlight.

Phonebook
It’s easy to use and caller ID pictures can be assigned to different users. A very much like the layout of Nokia’s phonebook as several numbers/details can be assigned under one contact name. Caller groups can be configured so you can easily dedicate a ring tone to a specific group, for example ‘Family’.
Organiser
Functions include a calendar, wallet (to securely store credit details), stopwatch, countdown timer, calculator, To-do list, Notes and Alarm clock.
WAP Browsing
Browsing is quick, simple and fast. X-HTML allows you to view WAP pages that are slightly more advanced. Of course, with GPRS you’re able to surf at high speeds. But if your operator supports this service, EDGE can be used for an even faster connection. But again with the screen size, images and graphics on pages can appear small.

Messaging
I was unable to try out My Presence (does any network support this feature yet?!), but it’s simply an instant messaging service which is controlled by your network operator. T9 text entry makes it easy to type not only messages but text into the phone. With MMS you can add in multiple slides to send several pictures for example, but there is a size limit.
Other Features
Voice commands allow you to not only dial number buy saying names but control and access features on your mobile. Handy if you’re slow at navigating, I suppose. It also features a loudspeaker for hands free calling. Bluetooth comes in handy for sending data over to other Bluetooth phones, computers or even a Bluetooth enabled device such as a photo printer.
Summary
The expandable MMC slot and media capabilities make’s this phone great. Bluetooth is another advantage. But what about that sparkle? The 6230 is very similar to other Nokia’s… the user interface of the phone isn’t one of the best points; menus look a bit boring (perhaps they were going for the sophisticated look). But to me, nothing seemed to look animated; everything was flat, plain and simple. Compare this phone to the Motorola V80, both phones are sophisticated and even though the 6230 has better specifications the V80 attracts users through style; the swivel design and the rhythm lights. In my eyes, with the 6230 there’s something missing. It’s fair to say that this phone doesn’t really stand out from other Nokia’s, except with it’s specifications. If the 6230 was my mobile I would get bored with it quickly (like my sister has) and I’d want to change phones pretty soon. But hey… we all have different tastes!!!
